By the people... for the people... Really?

A very though-provoking article by Shailesh Pandey |

I still can’t figure out why I wrote those “dates” , maybe I was trying to give a structure to my thoughts. Thoughts which were too mixed up, but then I decided to start writing with a hope that they will sort themselves out. Here I would mention that I am no historian and have no expertise to claim factual correctness and I am sure that all the readers are going to discount for this weakness of mine !!

1857 : Liwaspur , Haryana … Udami Ram (A Govt official –nambardar) organizes the local populace to take on the British forces. A small group of 22 brave hearts are always on the lookout for British Forces and vanish after attacking them swiftly with their makeshift weapons. And as it has happened most of the times in our freedom struggle, they are caught when a traitor betrays them for a reward. In keeping with their best traditions, British subject entire village to unimaginable tortures, crush all the young men under big stones meant to level roads. No one survives. Then they turn their attention to Udami Ram and his wife whom they have already subjected to inhuman tortures and nail them to a Pipal tree near the rest house at Sonepat. The torture continues unabated. They succumb 35 days later and their bodies receive a similar treatment as other people, they are crushed to pulp under those stones. And thus ends an uprising by COMMON PEOPLE.

June 2011 : Some where in Haryana … I was passing Sonepat on my way to Punjab and I saw a big stone kept in a Park named “Tau Devilal Park”. I was curious why they should keep a stone so carefully in a park, so I stopped and decided to see for myself. What I came across has been produced above. And I decided to know beyond what was written on the plaque there. This took me to Liwaspur, Udami Ram’s village. And this was where I was SHOCKED. Time has stopped for the villagers. They still live in 1857!!

The traitor who betrayed Udami Ram was rewarded with the ownership of all the land. Till today the Gram Sabha of this village has no Land and the cases continue in court. Until recently, the traitors family were “traditionally” the nambardaars of the village. All the requests petitions to EVERYONE have fallen on deaf years. The family of Udami Ram lives in a pathetic condition. Its hard not to notice the gloom that surrounds the village, the hopelessness is palpable. I felt that too, but I guess it was to be so, since they had no Udami Ram alive, who would take up their cause and fight for them. And in his absence, future generations of the martyr had forgotten almost everything to join ranks with COMMON PEOPLE.

December 2012 : New Delhi … A Girl is subjected to inhumanly torture and thrown on streets. After fighting with her injuries and massive infections, she succumbs 12 days later. Massive protests erupt demanding justice. The demand is “nothing” when seen in the backdrop of the “might” of the Govt. They could easily engage with protestors and assure justice, but they don’t. They come down heavily on these people using every way to crush them. Their lackeys masquerading as “intellectuals” and well “entrenched” in the editorials of newspapers and in the TV shows, shout out to the citizenry that these protests were nothing but an attempt by some fringe, lumpen elements, out to destabilize Government by spreading rumors and chaos. Citizens are falsely implicated, arrested and the “rulers” make sure that EVERY VOICE is silenced. And most of us are left wondering about whether the “People” in the Preamble of our constitution means elite few or the COMMON PEOPLE!!

Sure we have attained freedom but we really need to be free of the “ways” that were passed on to us by our “rulers” who don’t rule us anymore but whatever is done to the populace and the manner in which they are treated does gives an impression of an invisible hand. A hand that was always there, will always be there to make sure that WE as a nation keep paying for 1857.

‘Hafta diary’ helps cops zero in on rape bus. SAY WHAT !!!!!

This amazing ans shameful input is from Daily Pioneer....gosh !

‘Hafta diary’ helps cops zero in on rape bus Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:35 Pramod Kumar Singh | New Delhi

It was the corrupt practice of allowing transporters to illegally run their buses after-hours that helped the police zero in on the vehicle used in Sunday's gangrape, sources say.

A traffic policeman had reportedly recorded the registration number of the bus in a 'hafta' diary - a record of illegally-plying buses for which bribes have been paid for exemption of prosecution. That immunity from police, however, is seen as the sole reason the gangrape was not detected as no cop intercepted it while it circled the area slowly.

The cop identified the bus when the police relayed the description provided by the victims. It finally led the police to zero in on two transporters with Yadav as their surnames. The bus was culled from a list of 370 chartered buses and the owner Dinesh Yadav was picked up by the police from his Noida Sector 62 residence and brought to verify the description of driver Ram Singh and also identify him after his arrest.

See the politicians aren't that different after all !

The only American citizen officially listed as missing despite his whereabouts being known !!

To anyone, this would appear to be a well-composed potrait photograph. Except that it isn't ! Yup, this is actually a 20" x 15", ink on  paper art, called 'Sippling' which is made up of 2.1 million (yes million) dots by Benjaman Kyle.

Here is a closer look...

Benjaman Kyle is the pseudonym adopted by a man who has dissociative amnesia. He was discovered unconscious on August 31, 2004, in Richmond Hill, Georgia and is believed to be about 64 years old.[3] He had been unable to obtain employment without a Social Security number. He is the only American citizen officially listed as missing despite his whereabouts being known.

Go here and help get a new Social Security Number....http://miguelendara.com/art/benjamankyle/

Nirbhaya - We Salute You !

Been a while since I could muster enough to comment about a crime that has shaken the entire country from its roots. Best of all, the politicinas have been exposed as to their fear of the 'aam-aadmi' (normal citizen) ! They have been left speechless, checkmated and most of all booed away from making mileage of the civil society gatherings ! God Bless 'Nirbhaya's' soul.

Here is an interesting op-ed from NYT today....a good read...

The Unspeakable Truth About Rape in India
By SONIA FALEIRO

I LIVED for 24 years in New Delhi, a city where sexual harassment is as regular as mealtime. Every day, somewhere in the city, it crosses the line into rape.

As a teenager, I learned to protect myself. I never stood alone if I could help it, and I walked quickly, crossing my arms over my chest, refusing to make eye contact or smile. I cleaved through crowds shoulder-first, and avoided leaving the house after dark except in a private car. At an age when young women elsewhere were experimenting with daring new looks, I wore clothes that were two sizes too large. I still cannot dress attractively without feeling that I am endangering myself.

Things didn’t change when I became an adult. Pepper spray wasn’t available, and my friends, all of them middle- or upper-middle-class like me, carried safety pins or other makeshift weapons to and from their universities and jobs. One carried a knife, and insisted I do the same. I refused; some days I was so full of anger I would have used it — or, worse, had it used on me.

The steady thrum of whistles, catcalls, hisses, sexual innuendos and open threats continued. Packs of men dawdled on the street, and singing Hindi film songs, rich with double entendres, was how they communicated. To make their demands clear, they would thrust their pelvises at female passers-by.

If only it was just public spaces that were unsafe. In my office at a prominent newsmagazine, at the doctor’s office, even at a house party — I couldn’t escape the intimidation.

On Dec. 16, as the world now knows, a 23-year-old woman and a male friend were returning home after watching the movie “Life of Pi” at a mall in southwest Delhi. After they boarded what seemed to be a passenger bus, the six men inside gang-raped and tortured the woman so brutally that her intestines were destroyed. The bus service had been a ruse. The attackers also severely beat up the woman’s friend and threw them from the vehicle, leaving her to die.

The young woman didn’t oblige. She had started that evening watching a film about a survivor, and must have been determined to survive herself. Then she produced another miracle. In Delhi, a city habituated to the debasement of women, tens of thousands of people took to the streets and faced down police officers, tear gas and water cannons to express their outrage. It was the most vocal protest against sexual assault and rape in India to date, and it set off nationwide demonstrations.

To protect her privacy the victim’s name was not released publicly. But while she remains nameless, she did not remain faceless. To see her face, women had only to look in the mirror. The full measure of their vulnerability was finally understood.

When I was 26, I moved to Mumbai. A commercial and financial megalopolis, it has its own special set of problems, but has, culturally, been more cosmopolitan and liberal than Delhi. Giddy with my new freedom, I started to report from the red-light district and traveled across rough suburbs late at night — on my own and using public transit. It seemed that something good had come out of living in Delhi: I was so grateful for the comparatively safe environment of Mumbai that I took full advantage of it.

The young woman, however, will never have such an opportunity. On Saturday morning, 13 days after she was brutalized, this student of physical therapy, who had, no doubt, dreamt of improving lives, lost her own. She died of multiple organ failure.

India has laws against rape; seats reserved for women in buses, female officers; special police help lines. But these measures have been ineffective in the face of a patriarchal and misogynistic culture. It is a culture that believes that the worst aspect of rape is the defilement of the victim, who will no longer be able to find a man to marry her — and that the solution is to marry the rapist.

These beliefs aren’t restricted to living rooms, but are expressed openly. In the months before the gang rape, some prominent politicians had attributed rising rape statistics to women’s increasing use of cellphones and going out at night. “Just because India achieved freedom at midnight does not mean that women can venture out after dark,” said Botsa Satyanarayana, the Congress Party leader in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Change is possible, but the police must document reports of rape and sexual assault, and investigations and court cases have to be fast-tracked and not left to linger for years. Of the more than 600 rape cases reported in Delhi in 2012, only one led to a conviction. If victims believe they will receive justice, they will be more willing to speak up. If potential rapists fear the consequences of their actions, they will not pluck women off the streets with impunity.

The volume of protests in public and in the media has made clear that the attack was a turning point. The unspeakable truth is that the young woman attacked on Dec. 16 was more fortunate than many rape victims. She was among the very few to receive anything close to justice. She was hospitalized, her statement was recorded and within days all six of the suspected rapists were caught and, now, charged with murder. Such efficiency is unheard-of in India.

In retrospect it wasn’t the brutality of the attack on the young woman that made her tragedy unusual; it was that an attack had, at last, elicited a response.

Talking of books...here's a newly released book on Gen Petraeus

‘The Insurgents,’ about David Petraeus, by Fred Kaplan

New York TImes review is as under :-
"According to Fred Kaplan’s new book about Gen. David H. Petraeus and his attempt to re-envision American military strategy, the general had a philosophy about publicity. “I have a ‘Front Page of The Washington Post’ rule,” he told attendees at a counterinsurgency field manual workshop in 2006. “If you don’t want to see something on the front page of The Washington Post, then don’t do it, don’t say it.”

But as Mr. Petraeus would learn in 2012, when he made front-page news with an embarrassing personal transgression, not even the best-made rules cover all conceivable challenges. That point is central to “The Insurgents,” a very readable, thoroughly reported account of how, in American military circles, “counterinsurgency” became a policy instead of a dirty word. "Violence Against Women Act" stalled in US House by Republicans

Before we Indians start beating ourselves down over the 8 years delay we have had in bringing the Women's Safety Act on the Parliament's table, read this...

House GOP Lets Violence Against Women Act Passed By Senate Die Without A Vote

WASHINGTON -- Despite a late-stage intervention by Vice President Joe Biden, House Republican leaders failed to advance the Senate's 2012 reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, an embattled bill that would have extended domestic violence protections to 30 million LGBT individuals, undocumented immigrants and Native American women.

"The House leadership would not bring it up, just like they wouldn't bring up funding for Sandy [hurricane damage] last night," said Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), a key backer of the Senate version of the bill, in an interview with HuffPost. "I think they are still so kowtowing to the extreme on the right that they're not even listening to the moderates, and particularly the women, in their caucus who are saying they support this."
